Wilson Capron

Wilson grew up in far West Texas, where his family was involved in the ranching industry. During Wilson’s high school years, the family ranched 150,000 acres with about 1,000 mother cows. It was here that he developed an appreciation for horsemanship and the skills of a cowboy.

After high school, Wilson attended college at Tarleton State University for two years before moving to Lone Oak, Texas, where he lived with Greg Darnall for five years. While living with Darnall and his family, Wilson graduated from Texas A&M University-Commerce in 1996 with a degree in Ag-Business. In May of that year, Wilson began working in Darnall’s bit and spur shop where he learned the art of engraving and the function of the bridle bit. During his time with the Darnalls, Wilson learned much about horsemanship, team roping and the bit and spur business, a wealth of information to be treasured and remembered.

Wilson’s unique designs stem from the influences of Darnall, as well as from his father, artist/cowboy Mike Capron, whose understanding of formal art is another resource that Wilson will always cherish. Today Wilson lives in Midland, Texas, where he spends his days making bits and spurs and his evenings roping and studying horsemanship. Research and development in the professional rodeo arena, combined with long hours in his shop, continue to contribute to Wilson’s art as a bit and spur maker.
