David Alderson

In 1976 his family moved to California. In 1978 Alderson found himself in his uncle’s saddle shop where he saw an engraving ball for the first time. Since he wasn’t working a steady job at the time, he spent several weeks learning about engraving from him along with visits from Bill Wimmer, a bit and spur maker in the Paso Robles area. After getting comfortable enough to show someone what he could do, his uncle introduced him to Gordon Hayes, owner of Bits of Silver. He hired Alderson on the spot and worked for him for one year, was laid off, then went to work for the well-known Fritch Brothers Silversmiths. After a year he left and went back to Bits of Silver where there was more to learn about silversmithing and welding as well as working on his engraving skills.

In 1989 Alderson went into business for himself and started engraving for his own customers as well as other makers. He then became interested in firearms engraving and attended the NRA gun school at Lassen College in Susanville where he completed two courses, earning college credits.

He also took employment in a couple of jewelry stores where he learned to do repair, casting and stone setting. At present, Alderson is working out of his home and traveling to shows in Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming and California.
